landrovers was the name of one of the first British civilian all-terrain utility vehicles, first produced by Rover in 1948. Eventually, thelandrovers division was split off from Rover, and produced an expanding range of four wheel drive vehicles under a succession of owners, including British Leyland, British Aerospace,landroverdefender BMW, and, from 2000, Ford in the Premier Automotive Group.landrovers are manufactured in Solihull, England (near Birmingham) and exported around the world. Land Rover Range Rover: This full-size sport-utility vehicle offers high-end amenities andoff-roadcapabilities with permanent four-wheel-drive and Global Positioning System “bird’s eye” navigation. Made to withstandlandroverdefenderoff-roadconditions, the Range Rover packs a 4.4-liter 32-valve V-8 engine with 282 horsepower. It also features a five-speed automatic transmission that allows for manual shifting when needed. The ride is strong and smooth with independent front and rear suspension systems that employ special air springs. A 570-watt Harman Kardonlandroverdefender audio system with surround sound is standard. MSRP: $71,580.Land Rover Discovery: A midsize sibling to the Range Rover, the Discovery sport-utility vehicle is made for off-roadadventurewith Hill Descent Control and Active Cornering systems, easing the path over rough terrain. The Discovery, equipped with permanent all-wheel-drive, useslandroverdefender a 4.6-liter V-8 engine that generates 217 horsepower and goes from zero to 60 mph in less than 10 seconds. It has towing capacity of 7,700 pounds when the two-speed transfer case is in its “low” setting. The Discovery has standard features such as automatic climate control, a 12-speaker CDlandroverdefender system with 220 or 320 watts, along with GPS navigation in the HSE edition. A DVD entertainment system is available for the first time with the S and SE trims. The Discovery seats up to seven passengers.
