landrovers was the name of one of the first British civilian all-terrain utility vehicles, first produced by Rover in 1948. Eventually, thelandrovers division was split off from Rover, and produced an expanding range of four wheel drive vehicles under a succession of owners, including British Leyland, British Aerospace,catalogueBMW, and, from 2000, Ford in the Premier Automotive Group.landrovers are manufactured in Solihull, England (near Birmingham) and exported around the world. Thelandroverdefender is a4x4model fromlandrover, built to emulate the style of the original Serieslandrovers.Series models and landroverdefenders are confusedcataloguedue to their similar styling, although the differences are large. The principal differences betweenlandroverdefenders and Series models are thatlandroverdefenders are coil-sprung whereas Series models are leaf-sprung, and also thatlandroverdefenders are permanently four wheel drive with a locking central differential, whereas the Series vehicles havecatalogueselectable two or four wheel drive.

landroverentered production in 1948, with the introduction of the Series I, which came in 80 in, 86 in, 88 in, 107 in and 109 in models. It was originally designed for farm and light industrial use, and had a steel box-section chassis, and an aluminium body.
